PC USB Port Failure Troubleshooting

This guide is based on the HP Zbook laptop. If you have another model, some of the solutions may not work for you.

Updates

Make sure your laptop is up to date. You can find your Windows Update by going to the Start menu and typing "Update". Use the dropdown to select Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.

Next check for updates in the HP Support Assistant. You can search for it in the Start Menu. If you don't find it, you can install it from FOX Self Service. If you are not a FOX employee contact your IT administrator if you need help downloading and installing it.

When you are finished with updates, reboot the machine.

Manually Reset Ports

If your computer is updated and the ports still don't respond, a manual reset might clear the issue.

  1. Remove Power adapter, and while the laptop is switched off, hold on to Power Button for 30 seconds.
  2. Plug power adapter in, and hold down Windows+B+Power buttons for 15 seconds (Computer should still be off)
  3. After this, hold down Windows+V+Power buttons for 15 seconds (Computer should still be off)

Your laptop may light up the keyboard or other small indicators during this process, but you should not hear anything nor see anything on screen so you know it's still 'off'.

Turn the laptop back on. You will likely hear the fans going very strongly. Once it's booted up, the ports should work again.

Reimage Machine

This is a last resort because it will reset your computer to the original settings and you will lose all your applications and data stored on it.

Back up all your files if you have a cloud storage or network drive solution for this. Make a note of all your applications you need so you can reinstall them. You may want to take some snapshots of settings in some of your applications, etc. so that you can copy them in the new operating system when you get it back.

For FOX employees, contact the FOX Help Desk and arrange to get them your laptop so they can try to fix it. They may try some things before reimaging, but be prepared for it anyway. You can also go to the Help Bar and drop off the laptop there if you are on the Lot.
